How many tickets are sold? How many win? What is the percentage payback - delivered winnings after taxes vs. total dollars in?
"The chance of winning a State Lottery is the same whether you buy a ticket or not" to at least six significant figures.
No slot in Vagas pays less than 90% back, and the ones by entrances pay as much as 98% back. No state lottery pays more than 50% back at best. The average ticket return including all prizes before taxes is 5%, a nickel back for every dollar spent.
Poisson distribution for both cases, slots vs. lotteries. Which has the better payback fluctuations?
Generate 1000 number sets from shuffling cards or pi to a million decimal places, or whatever. Lottery winning number are all over the Net. After you have your numbers, invest $1000 for 1000 entries each in 1000 runs of lotteries. Write a batch file with DOS SORT and whatnot and let your computer chug it. What did you get back, including all prizes, for your $million? Bupkis.
