This reads like standard alarmism.
But buckyballs can also steal electrons from surrounding molecules -- a process known as oxidation and a common mechanism of tissue damage.
A buckyball can only take so many electrons, they're quite stable.
It should be mentioned that the buckyball is naturally occuring (discovered in 1985). The challenge has been to artificially create one. We're not making anything new, just an application for it. A tiny suitcase. Pop a molecule of metal or acetaminophen and you have a nice little delivery system. So they "steal" electrons. So does every other molecule in the universe.
*cough*
The study, described at a scientific meeting Sunday, was small and has yet to be peer reviewed or published in a scientific journal. After it's picked apart and validated (or invalidated) I might pay a little more attention to the doomsday prophesies for water fleas and sea bass.
