Re: Bringing the Sun down to Earth? (Mike Kremer)

"Just about every nation with a decent physics lab has been racing away to produce unlimited energy, using Nuclear Fusion, just as our sun does."

Don't be an idiot.

  1. "Controlled nuclear fusion" is nothing more than refinement of bomb codes (plasma hydrodynamics).

  2. Only the richest of nations can even presume to play the game.

  3. The sun does not fuse deuterium-tritum.

  4. Nobody can handle a 10,000 curie tritium inventory without contaminating the world.

  5. Nobody has the slightest hallucination of an idea how to make a power plant out of a working fusion reactor. Nobody has solved the first wall problem. Nobody can work with the MeV neutrons that carry 50% of the energy produced. Nobody is crazy enough to place multi-tesla superconducting coils in a hard radiation field a foot away from a 100 million degree C high pressure (a full atmosphere) plasma and call it SOP.

  6. If your production line needs even one PhD, you don't have a production line. Power fission reactors are largely run by blue-collar folk.

Everybody (qualified everybody) has thought of everything. Burning fossil fuel and fissioning uranium are the big kahunas. The E*L*E*C*T*R*I*C car and the H*Y*D*R*O*G*E*N car are political bullshit. Thermodynamics always wins:

  1. You cannot win.
  2. You can only break even on a very cold day.
  3. It never gets that cold.
