How is matter glued together ?

(24.4.91.65)Hi,
sorry for the potentially naive questions but here they are:
How are the atoms of let's say an object or a living entity glued together ?
Why do they stay together ?
And finally why/how things are limited, ie, have an edge. What is different at the edge of something compared to the middle of something ? Is there a specific proporety of atoms at the edge of things so there is a limit and att he same the integrity of the object is preserved and it does fall apart form the edges ?
Maybe there is a source that answer these basic qustions somewhere ?
thx
