All my guns are working guns. They aren't stored away. They are loaded, and I periodically unload, check, clean and reload them. I regularly exercise them as well. A loaded gun is a form of protection. An unloaded gun is an invitation to rapidly escalating danger. My son has known since he was old enough to walk that guns are not toys and how to safely carry one without endangering himself or others. He has never had a "toy" gun and has not suffered any emotional trauma for the lack.
And thanks to the presence of my working guns, he has lived the past thirteen years of his life in peace and security, safe from the person who would have otherwise done him harm.
Guns don't kill people. The finger that squeezes the trigger does. Make no mistake, I am committed to the squeezing, if and when it is the only alternative.
