Selina, I think you are asking somehow the wrong question.
Everyone is an atheist at birth, so, principially speaking,the question is what makes one become religious/embrace religion."Becoming an atheist" as you say,implicitly assumes that you are familiar with religious concepts,and you have decided not to believe in them, which is,at least in a rough outline,the answer to your question.
As for my reasons to be atheist, they are very simple:first of all, the recounted facts of any of the holy books do not stand against any logical and factual scrutiny, and secondly, because believeing in an omnipotent and omniscient antropomorphical figure does not help me in any way in getting any better understanding of the nature/reality sorrounding me (if you like it better, at this time a god is an unnecessary assumption).
