Re: Stored Energy? (Amaranth Rose)

Not having any real knowledge of the subject I naturally have to put in my 2 cents worth. I think that the magnetic field of the magnet is only one aspect. There is also an electric part to the electromagnetic field. As such, there will be a transfer of energy from the magnet to the ball. The amount will be very small, but if you run enough balls by you will be able to detect the decay in the magnetic field.

Any way, I don't think permanent magnets are really "permanent". They are just permanent with respect to human expectations/needs.

I also think Robert needs to redo his calculations. The amount of energy needed to move the ball over will be very much less than he has indicated. Moving a one ounce ball 1 inch 1,000,000 times will not require anything like the amount of energy he claims. I'm going to be lazy, but it sounds like it will take 1,000,000 inch-ounces of energy. Conversion of that value to foot-pounds is left as an exercise for the student.
