Well big ones might be able to be blown apart, which would allow hundreds of smaller pieces to
fall Earthwards.....spreading the fallout, and killing less people.

Yes, the Near Earth Observation program does give
stable employment to dozens of NASa personel, for the forseable future. I dont equate it with Seti.
But I might agree with you that, IF we run out of Oil, we might not have the rocket power to hit a dangerous Asteroid in say- 200 years?
Still these guys are doing a great job in saving their skins, and hopefully yours.
