Nanite programmers are using "swarm" algorithms based on insect behavior in an effort to produce "emergent intelligence" with distributed computing. Interesting to study, should you get the chance.

If you're a Michael Chrichton fan, you might pick up "Prey." Even if you don't want to read the book, I found several dozen references to some good scientific reading on the subject.

... That's neither here nor there, though. If insects were able to communicate with each other to the degree that these nanobots are hoped to, they could very quickly become much more advanced than we in logic and strategy as well as speed and clarity of thought. It's not very likely that evolution will take that turn though, I should think.

Prey is fun to read though, should you have time. You might just pick it up to read the forward in the library, which is only about 5 pages. I liked the forward more than the rest of the book, personally.
