how can I test resonance on a musical instrument

one day I discovered that if I over tightened the neck screw of my instrument a certain way, it played much more responsive. I intially thought it was because there was an air leak, but when I used slicone at the joint ther was absolutely no chage. my problem is this only works once because it totally deforms the neck inside the instrument. what factors made such a change? Please help!!!!!
