A preliminary first impression.
I don't think there are many "well prepared" answers for your dissertation because of the complexity of the problem. We are biased in our observation capability. I mean we are mostly attracted by the upper part (visible) of the iceberg. I suggest to transcend the individual/individual case and consider almost the population consideration. In a stabilized population there are always a few individuals acting differently but they don't affect really the population. But indeed, pioneers are benefical for the population when a novelty is introduced. I'm not speaking genetic, only ethology.
Moreover, observing complexe breeding in the real world (not in labs), I'm ready to believe that pheromones play a more important role than the single emision/reception generally admitted. Just a suggestion. A first approach.
