Re: Lichen Blamed for Elk Deaths in Wyoming (Amaranth Rose)

When reading the suggested page, I have the feeling that accent is made on the toxic periodicity of lichen. If I remember my botanic, mostly autotrophy lichens are symbiosis of algae and fungi.
Amazing simple life association affected by a secular slow development rate. It's not a hard task to consider recent natural (or man made) climatic changes could be the principal actor of lichen's duality equilibrium rupture. From my region lichen population is declining. Toxicity could be regarded as a biotic response of one of the lichen component survivorship. May call that escalation against predation if you fancy this term. I think this event is overstated.

At another scale, but equally periodic, numerous marine species, formerly accepted as seafood become toxic for human consumption at the same period. Dinoflagellate is blamed.
