Question is the driving force in all of science. But this particular event is nice because it is theory in action.

Stephen Hawking spoke of black holes ejecting radiation (Hawking radiation) decades ago. And of course we already believed that black holes would, at their poles, eject matter, at speeds approaching the speed of light, in streams of particles.

When speaking of the attractive force of a black hole, one refers to its "event horizon", aka "sphere of influence", aka Schwartzchild radius. Only that matter captured by the event horizon is drawn to the black hole.
