I think the French made a big mistake on this one persumably for the right reasons. Not wearing any of the religious clothes is a statement in itself. It simply makes the majority view on these matters enforceable by law. The more that people can bring their beliefs and customs out into the public arena the quicker they reach agreements. Suppressing these belief or customs causes people to cling to them more. I think the conflicting beliefs, scientific or otherwise, between humans is a hugh driving force for discovery, long may it continue.
