We really don't know. We know it has an affect but to be perfectly honest we don't know what it is.
We don't know if gravity is always attractive. We don't know what other forces act on mass. And we don't know how things are going to end if there is even such a concept beyond the human mind.
By instinct is that one had best go to google.com and look up "Calabi Yau Space" if one wishes to truly understand what is going on. Our universe may not be one ... but it seems to act like one.
