I've given more thought to your reply while at work.
I think ethics appeared before religion. Ethics is a belief about what is right or wrong and is subjective and arises from positive or negitive results from our actions or is programmed into us from others who have their ethics already defined.
Religion is an attempt to explain things we do not know about. Most religions do teach certain ethics however religion is not needed for ethics.
