Writing is cathartic.
A major Horror writer, now passed, was reviled (and even black balled in the U.S. for a time) because his horror novels repeatedly brutalized women.
In truth, they brutalized men and women, but female readers and editors only saw the brutality towards women.
I once asked him about it and he owned up to the fact that he went overboard in terrorizing the women in his novels. When I asked why he said (not a perfect quote),
"Because the two most important people in my life are my child and wife. I watch the news and see all that stuff. All the crap. So if my wife is two minutes late from getting back from the grocery store, or my daughter takes too long getting back from school, these horrors build in my mind and won't let go. I have to write them down to get it out of my head."
So he wrote his stories and novels. Stories that even scared Stephen King and Dean Koontz.
Stories that assailed and offended and terrified those who read them.
So when you read his stories, you were reading the very thing that scared him the most.
Writing is cathartic.
