Actually, I mentioned cookies just because it seemed to me you were referring exclusively to email addresses, and cookies were another possibility.
Of course, the above is another possible scenario, I never claimed that what I said was the only possibility. However, it might not be the most plausible one, unless you have something like Polichinelle's secret type of conspiracy.
