Actually the baby will blink; unless it is stone blind. It's hands will also jerk, and older babies with better muscle coordination and development will automatically interpose their hands between themselves and the rock given sufficient time to react. This isn't learned; it's hard wired. They won't crawl over an edge with a drop-off, either (the "visual cliff" experiments). Check any good developmental Psychology book.
