Re: Hawkings Warning (danno might)

Supposing that another civilization, more advanced than us, does exist. There is nothing to support the idea that they must, by the very reason of their intelligence, come from an earthlike planet OR be anything like us in their behavior.

Therefore, there is no reason to believe that they would have any interest in dominating us any more than we would want to dominate an intelligent form of life on Jupiter.

When you talk about what has ever happened on earth, bear in mind that you are referring to life forms that dominate other life forms because they share the same ecosystem and resources. Where the differences in ecosystems are greater, dominance is less. For example, no one is trying to dominate the life forms that live at the bottom of the ocean and feed off of the acids bubbling out of volcanic vents. And we never will until and unless the trouble of creating such technology was balanced by the need or desire to be there.

Hell, the only reason that Mars fascinates us so is the idea that, of all the planets, it is closer to ours in resources and ecosystem than any other planet in the solar system. All of the others aren't worth consideration.

We will never be able to live on the surface of Jupiter, far beneath the crushing tons of atmosphere and the gravity of the thing. And if it should happen that intelligent life forms do live on the surface of Jupiter? The very idea of intelligent life being able to exist in such extremes is so unimaginable to us that we simply discount the possibility outright. But if such a life form did exist, they would scarce be interested in living on earth.

And with such powerful radiation coming out of Jupiter, I doubt that they would have ever bothered to try communicating with radio waves.
