There is alot to be said for the benefits of assimilation.
I doubt that the meager things living organisms need to support themselves is grounds for fear of competition.
It may be that the rewards derived out of the random paths that life takes may outweigh the rewards gained by assimilating a lower species.
An advanced civilisation might be waiting for us to come up with something good.
