Nobody is waiting for some idyllic future. You are only seeing the inertia of infrastructure.
(its why, over 30 years later, Japan still has 100 mph+ trains and we still don't!)

Already we have nuclear power plants making clean energy.
Tall windmills pepper the windiest hillsides in California (you can see them coming in West from I-10).
The solar power car races are heating up in Australia.
Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and GM are putting hybrid vehicles on the road, now, as they work up to the technology of making vehicles totally independent of petroleum.
And the direction of fuel cell technology is very exciting to anyone who looks forward to an atmosphere nearly devoid of artificially created pollutants.

The moon would be an incredible, virtually unending source of clean energy, once we get there and develop the means to use it.

Don't feel so down, amigo. The modern dinosaurs are dying, they just ain't going down easy.
