If the synagogue (building for regular assembly of Jews for religious instruction and worship) has no reverence nor reference to God, what about just in the open - or openly, since God isn't in the equation, which, of course He is, or it wouldn't stipulate the Day of Atonement be done so publicly, with (in front of) your fellow Jews.

But then I'm not technically Jewish, either, yet do agree asking and receiving forgiveness must come from the heart and mind, and is best requested of those you've wronged. Both would be served announcing it to all your friends and family (via the synagogue) on a given day, annually.
