In fact, I believe that if you had a sufficiently sensitive mass measuring device that you would find that the total mass of the components in a chemical reaction would be different from the total mass of the resulting compounds. The difference in the measured mass would be the mass equivalent of the energy given up or taken in by the reaction. Granted that this is defined as the energy component of the compounds, but if you make a mass measurement, then you will get a mass reading. The mass difference will be very small, but it will show up, because that is what you are measuring.
