Let's see, there are maybe 500 IVF clinics in this country, averaging maybe three donor cycles per month, that's roughly 18,000 per year. Donor cycles are the most successful, on average.
A small minority of these use family donors, such as eggs from a younger sister. The bulk of them are from anonymous donors who are paid around $10K, more or less.
And they should be paid. They have risk (e.g. OHSS), discomfort, and inconvenience from the process, besides leaving with fewer eggs than when they arrived.
In an ideal world, this would never happen. In the real world, it's the only way some people can have babies.
