So, maybe the neanderthals never went extinct. Maybe they just...went. Out there. Into outer space before the cataclysm that destroyed their civilization. Left a few behind to intermingle with the Cro-Magnons that were coming along behi8nd them. YOu can't get every last one of a species on a spaceship, even if you're only packing their DNA. Only those with the vision to realize the supernova is coming and get the heck out of its way.
