Check out Charles Sheffield's "Borderlands of Science". I've found it very valuable in explaining why things can or cannot work in the "real" unreal world, and what things can be tweaked and why. It contains some math, though not an overwhelming amount. It's a calm, rational explanation of a lot of good hard science, in terms the lay person can assimilate. A good read, and a good resource for the Science/Sci-Fi writer.
