Every oppressive tyrant dwells in the hearts and minds of the people they victimize and oppress. No tyrant can be removed from their earthly throne until they have been removed from the hearts and minds of the people they enslave.
It's not original. Someone else said it long before me. It's still around because it's still true.
See Hussein, Mussolini, Marcos, Tito, Ciaocescu, Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Dung, the Roman Catholic Church, George W. Bush, the list is enormous.
Think about it.
My sincere best wishes to all the survivors of tyrants and tyranny, and to all those still struggling to cast out the oppressors in their own lives. There is no pain like that which is self-inflicted. Freedom begins, not with the death of the tyrant on the stage of life, but with the exorcism of that tyrant from the heart of the people. You can't free people; they forge their own chains. If you remove their fetters by force they will only forge more. You must give them a reason to value life without fetters more than their bondage. Status quo carries with it an enormous amount of momentum.
You can lead the Iraqi people to freedom, but you can't make them accept it. They have to want to be free, and in that moment that they choose it they will be truly free.
