Metaphorically speaking, we are not in the situation of even finding agent orange on the lawn: which would at least suggest a smoking gun if not direct evidence. Since direct concrete evidence may not be forthcoming, a smoking gun would be acceptable. But all we see at the present are symptoms. Human Made Pollutants are only one of many possibilities - and not more valid - than many other theories. HMP is in fact, less of a possibility than global warming being a natural occurrance at this stage. Geographicaly speaking, we are certainly due*
A metaphor more in tune with this situation would be treating a patient for a brain tumor when they have meningitis. The patient cannot be cured with this type of treatment and they will die as a result of it.
Radically changing our industry, and thus our economies, would have a small but significant impact on the most advanced countries. Industrial nations can and will easily whether the change. But the impact on smaller economic nations as well as the already straining poverty stricken nations would be devastating.
Before we go making a decision that would put the world in a temporary economic depresion that would likely kill millions (the wealthy nations would o longer have trillions to loan and invest), based on the most "press popular" theory of the moment, we need to be far more sure about our actions than we are now.

*I admit that we've still a long way to go in accurately mapping out global shifts in warming, ice ages, and in the magnetic poles. We also don't know how many ice ages or warm periods were caused by abrupt tectonic/ volcanic events or cosmic events - like large meteors. By saying "due" I don't pretend to have a time clock on this, only that it is quite likely that we could be on the verge of a natural global occurance.
