I could even conceive that the tectonic plates or even mantel would "remoult" with lava flows forming a new crust on top of the old to compensate for the change in weight.
So that the balance between what's on top of the crust is enough to stop lava flowing through the gaps between the plates.

If this was conceivable how long would it be before we start experiencing these major quakes and eruptions? What are the concequences for people at various altitudes on the mainland and islands? What would the consequences of the air pollution be from these eruptions? How would it affect life in general?

I think there is a likely hood that only a small amount of life would survive something like that.
