Re: Mad Cow Disease Hits US (Measurement)

I watched with a sense of sadness as the events surrounding BSE unfolded in Britain. There is no pleasure in seeing people's lives ruined and apparently good animals destroyed. The handling of the situation, with people driven to desperate measures that only made matters worse, saddened me greatly. "Double-unblessworthy" as George Orwell wrote.

This discovery of BSE in the US, coming as it does in the darkest time of the year, brings another question to my mind. Why are we taking animals that are too sick to stand and butchering them for food? Does our greed and stupidity know no limits? I understand that ranching and farming, like any other businesses, have to make a profit. But do people actually not understand that sick animals are not fit to eat?

My grandfather was the proprietor of a small, independent abbatoir for a number of years. He refused to butcher animals that were too sick to walk. His reasoning was that he personally didn't want to catch something that was strong enough to make a cow sick. Have we totally taken leave of good sense?

On second thought, we have G W Bush for president. I think that argument may be intrinsically flawed.
