Following the money is only one part of the equation. The murky details of multiple "R"s and "T"s are in the natural laziness of people multiplied by their faith. For example, oilmen are oilmen and will beat the drum over how much better, cheaper, extraordinary, miraculous, a fuel it is over any other including coal. The coal giants will differ and so will the natural gas types and the hydroelectric types, etc. More than one can be right but they can't all be right.
Not that it matters. Following the money often leads to a dead paper trail where the money ran out, leaving only debt. Not that you could convince the proponents of the dead tech. They pounded their favorite drum right to the door of their own extinction. Either that or rightly had a change of heart at the last minute and joined the victors.
The experts are often not experts at all, just those who follow "rote". The early days of deals between IBM and the budding Microsoft are a prime example of that and there are more throughout history.
A modern example may be Monsanto, which creates Genetically Modified foods - not because they are more nutritious (though other companies do that), and not because they are more resistant to pests (though other companies do THAT), but because their GM foods are resistant to their own manufactured pest and herbicides. So you can dump more poison on the corn (and onto the ground and into the ground water), to kill the pests and weeds, while not killing the GMF. Human lives may be secondary. Reports are already in that some Monsanto poisons are impossible to remove from the skin of vegetables. You have to do without the skin entirely! As big and politically connected as they are, Monsanto is losing money while using rather draconian methods of marketing to a Euro population already in a decade plus long panic over another food problem - Spongiform Encephelitis - and may soon find itself a dead husk: bested by GMF companies looking for visionary profit instead of bean counting bottom line.
Science is one thing, how the Kenneth Lay's of the world use it is another.
What following the money WILL do is reveal the culprits. But why they believe or do one damn thing over another (fission or fusion for example), is as arcane as religion.
