To tell you the truth, I'm not at all sure which bee these might be, and it is quite possible I'm seeing both. Bees of various sort buzz about and battle often around here, and I never care to get close enough to any of 'em to find out exactly who's who. Here's a "teaser," though, that perhaps will help in figuring it all out.
From the ground, two to eight feet up along the partly naked trunk, there are several bore holes chaotically dotting the tree. Some seem almost helical, curving upward and sideways a skimming inch or so under the bark and extending several inches in length. Most of the holes, however, are but a half inch to two inches deep, directed straight inwards toward the tree's somewhat softer center.
The bees don't seem to be constructing a hotel, though, as carpenters are prone to do. They seem only to be visitors. They come a'bumbling by early in the morning, then again in the cool of the evening, and they never stay too long. Also, their party has never numbered more than five, and frequently their number is but one or two. No, I suspect there is just something they fancy about that particular tree.
Of late, though, Sawdust & Friends seem to be visiting less often. Summer is fast approaching. Soon, I'm afraid, their clumsy antics won't amuse me anymore.
