We used to call them cattle guards, in my younger days. Amazing how one gets so behind when one is away from the mainstream for so long. Grid. Gate. All methods of confinement based on fooling dumb animals. They must be awfully dumb; I've seen places where the cattle guard was simply stripes painted on the pavement. Still kept the cows in.
I wonder somehow if the cattle guards isn't somehow analogous to the light speed barrier; it can hold us in because we believe it to be impenetrable.
