Re: jocks and stereotypical comments (Mike )

Engaging in the brutality that unquestionably exists in many sports simply does not make sense to much of the general population. Watch slow-motion replays for example after example of extremely violent unsportsmanlike conduct ... many "sports" players really do seem to be out for blood, so to speak, and appear willing even to sacrifice, or is that to sell, their bodies for the chance to wear that ring.

That anyone would do such things for the sake of a game, or even for a dozen wheelbarrels full of money, is incomprehensible to many of the rest of us, the doctors, teachers, architects, and cooks of society. I mean, build a school and help a child learn about the role thermal upflows play in the pollination of certain flowers, or get gored in the ribs by a bull you purposely try to piss off... tough choice, huh?

Clearly, one of those activities requires that one possesses little to no intelligence, and this is attested to by the fact that many who engage in the latter hold to the notion that participation in such "sport" is what makes a man a man. What does that tell you about the "jock" mentality in general? That one doesn't have to reach very far to lay hold of the "not too bright" stereotype, perhaps?

Ponder now what this says not of the "jocks" themselves, but of the individuals who feast joyfully upon their bloodletting "play."
