What protection would a gaseous cell provide its host? What kind of stress and shear could this type of cell tollerate? Obviously their not suggesting that there is life out there with this exact make up. More that these problems may have been delt with through natural evolutionary steps or perhaps that these cells are utilised in conditions that these factors are not problems.
what about pores and other structures that are within cell walls?
Interesting and thought provoking work all the same.
