The complexity of the problem is that cancer cells acquire their unfortunate abilities by usurping some of the most basic of cellular processes – those of cell division and senescence. For that reason, I suspect that we will never be able to achieve a true “magic bullet” cure for cancer. That is, a treatment that specifically targets all the cancer cells in a patient and does not affect any normal cells. The acquisition of the cancerous state is too closely intertwined with the fundamental processes of living cells.
I hope I am proven to be wrong!
