This enormous loss of species occurred over a period of less than 10,000 years—almost instantly, in geological time."This is the first time ever that we can see how sudden this event was," said Peter Ward, a University of Washington paleontologist who led the team that reported the new research in the May 11 issue of Science. "It was very quick, not a long, protracted episode."
The findings were based on fossil records of one-celled organisms, called protists, which were found at a remote site in British Columbia.
The fossils showed there was sharp decline in the population of a certain organism. It coincided with scientific data indicating that at about the same time, Earth experienced an abrupt drop in levels of organic carbon (which is one measure of the amount of life on Earth).
it sure does coincide nicely with a worldwide flood scenario...with the exception of the millions of years jazz
one that would have buried massive quantities of carbon (organic material) and radically altered the ecosystem allowing new niches for many variants, which could have emerged rapidly
in any event...while uniformitarianism is far from dead, it should be...and it ought to be recognized for the nonsense that it is
catastrophic events, and the worldwide flood in particular, rather than gradual ones, are what have shaped our geologic landscape and the biosphere :-)
nice to see so many (ie many journal articles over the past two or three decades) heralding the return of catastrophic geology :-)
ps -- "This is the first time ever that we can see how sudden this event was," said Peter Ward, a University of Washington paleontologist
sorry, peter, i suspect that a fella named noah and his family would likely disagree...they lived to see it...eyewitnesses...not some guestimating, speculating, long-after-the-fact paleontologists :-)
