Smoking and pregnacy

(64.12.102.159)I am the daughter of a mother who married at 16, and had three children by 19. She is gone now, and was a wonderful mother. She smoked during the time she was pregnant. My father and his brother and their father and his brother who lived in the same house with my mother all smoked also (in another part of the house, a batchelor pad). My brother who died four months ago from Leukemia was dyslexic and had trouble reading, naturally. I had trouble with left and right even in adult years. I always felt different than others and had a hard time understanding new things. I have wondered for a few years if my brain was affected by my mother's smoking. She quit when I was 18, so I was around smoke all those years. I had constant sinus problems. When I read this information a light went on in my head. When I was pregnant, I did not smoke or drink or even take asprin. I took vitamins and ate a healty diet, and every one of our children are very bright and quick learners, as is my husband whose mother and father never drank or smoked at all. I can't chage anything, but I do feel better knowing this information. I am so glad that even as long as 36 years ago I realized that I should be very careful during the one and only time the child has to be formed. I remember once when I was expecting my first child, I had a very sore throat. My doctor prescribed a jel like medicine to coat my throat then I was to swallow it. I did it once, but was worried to take it again. I later learned it was related to the substance called thalidomide that caused babies to be born without arms and legs.
