To avoid confusion, I would put this in the passive voice rather than the active voice. As it is, it sounds like the animal intentionally changed its genetic make-up, which of course it cannot. (Only humans can do that - and only in the last couple of decades.)


As I'm sure most here know, the population of animals changed as the result of a change in environment because the individual animals within the population that were better adapted to the new environment were naturally selected to survive better and reproduce more.
