If one looks at thoroughbred horse speed vs. distance over the past 100 years, one comes to the conclusion that massive inbreeding has achieved an evolutionary dead end. More of the same won't be any better no matter how much computer time is invested in genetics vs. performance. The current product is a psychological horror and physically delicate.
The rational approach would be to identify weaknesses and crossbreed in improvements. But then they would not be thoroughbreds, would they? The parameterized discounted cashflow/return on investment risk!
Breeding and racing thoroughbreds started as a lark. The initial improvements were astounding. When folks transition from pursuing progress to worshipping ruins, they get their god good and hard.
