Water to steam is a 1700-fold expansion. A hot wire (as in electrical) would do it. Hydrogen plus oxygen plus a bit of platinum will produce a very credible explosion. Can you say "unremarkable?" A cotton ball flying 6 feet is higly suspect all by itself. Try doing it by any means and see what happens to the cotton ball.
Light element fusion converts about 0.1% of rest mass to energy, almost all of it emerging as energetic ~10 MeV) neutrons and protons. Chemistry is 1-3 eV (not MeV). Draw the obvious conclusion and add a fat dollop of radiation poisoning for those with faith instead of brains.
Your description of the experiment is ludicrous taken as any sort of nuclear reaction modality.
