Since stars like our sun (hypothetically) exist for 10 billion years in "this stage", and the next step is red giant...
I suppose that would depend on how good our hypothesis is and how old the sun really is.

Of course, before it goes big red all the oceans on earth will boil away, so I think that'll be a pretty good "early-warning sign"...
