Actually, Hiccups originate in the Diaphragm muscle, which lies between the chest and abdominal cavities. They are caused apparently by hyperoxygenation in an area of the diaphragm, which makes the muscle "twitchy". They can be relieved by any method that temporarily increases the blood levels of carbon dioxide, such as breath holding, or rebreathing exhaled air, as from a paper bag or the cupped hands over the mouth and nose.

Suffocation of the offending hiccupper is NOT recommended, however. :-)
