The population was Asian, and the Asian ethic towards schooling is FAR different -- more stressful (my personal favorite variable in the mix, for cause) -- than the first world's schooling attitudes generally are. Scientific American did a big piece on this difference about 10-12 years ago, entitled "Asian Schools," as best I remember, comparing them to American schools -- I have the piece at home, somewhere.

The Asian population's eyes are far more nearsighted (shortsighted) than other ethnic sorts' are -- prompting the scientists to drag the "genetic" whipping-boy out of their bags as the sole excuse for nearsightedness, when the genetic studies are highly variable, in point of fact.

The jury will be out for years....so what do we do till then?
