Ah, the bubonic plague or black death.
Many people used to carry a sweet smelling 'posie' to ward it off.
A still popular childrens nursery rhyme goes...
Ring-a-ring o' roses,
A pocket full of posies,
Atishoo, Atishoo,
We all fall down.To which children dance in a circle and fall down at the end.
It's origins are believed to be from the Great Plague of 1665 (England).
The rings of roses describes the red patches on victims. Atishoo (sneezing) was one of the symptoms of the disease. Fall down = dying.Of course this may be an urban legend, but it rings true with me.
