I might agree with you that there is great scope for a complete redesign of the Space Shuttle. Its hardly an atrocity.....I would liken it to Mankinds early attempts to sling his foetus into space attached to a primitive umbilical cord.

I agree that Heat shield tiles are complex and not the best option.
Been relooking at the Shuttle launch film. It looks like there was a (debris?) collision that may have deformed the leading edge of the space shuttles right rear wing, (no effects in space).
This would have caused the Space shuttle to skew
upon re entering the atmosphere, heating and melting the parts of the space shuttle that tiles cannot protect.

I personally favour the Spherical re entry capsule
the Russians used in the early days.
