NASA is a corrupt exercise in political patronage. Cynosure bureaucrats have killed good people and will continue to kill good people. The Space Shuttle is an atrocity: A low orbital nuclear bomber with skinny boosters because train tunnels could not accomodate proper ones and jointed boosters because the whole thing is too heavy to transport from political payoffs in California to Florida. Heat shield tiles were a favorite son contract. It's fat, complex, and stupid and it will fail in use.

The US needs a reliable and efficient heavy lifter. It doesn't have one because it has the Space Shuttle - stupid human tricks in space sucking multi-$billion budgets to no end beyond "more studies needed."
