The true legacy of heavy water is this: humans, having evolved on this watery planet, on which we can assume that it is very likely the ratio of heavy water to "light" water has probably always been pretty much the same as it is now, have developed the necessary mechanisms to cope with the situation. That's why we have all these elegant enzymes to find and remove DNA damage and repair it.
Actually, I'd expect we stand more hazard from UV radiation than tritiated water. For one thing, there seems to be a lot more of it.
