I chose the stems.
my reasoning:
there is more mass involved when considering the three choices.all of the mass of the leaves in a 20 yr old oak tree for instance would only equal twenty pounds or so.
the entire root system would only weigh in at around 100 - 150 pounds as the ground provides supportive stenght itself.
where the structure that can be refered to as the stem might weigh in at several thousand pounds.
the entire plant is affected by lack of sunlight on the leaves , yet the largest mass affected would be the stem.
was I close?
